“The Western Ghats get the fame. The Eastern Ghats keep the silence — and in Tamil Nadu, that silence lives in Yelagiri and Jawadhu.”

யேலகிரி

Yelagiri

1,110 m · 14 hairpin bends

A small cluster of villages above Vellore district. The drive up its 14 hairpin bends is half the trip. Easy to reach, easy to explore — perfect for a first hill-station weekend.

Bend 01 · Relax

Punganoor Lake

A calm man-made lake at the heart of the town. Go for a slow boat ride in the morning mist, then walk the small park beside it.

Bend 02 · Trek

Swamimalai Hills

The best sunrise trek here. Around 3 km one way through farms and forest to the highest point in Yelagiri. Start before dawn.

Bend 03 · Fly

Paragliding

Yelagiri is one of Tamil Nadu's few paragliding spots. Tandem flights glide over the valley — best in the winter season.

Bend 04 · Wander

Nature Park & Falls

A green, well-kept park with a musical fountain, plus Jalagamparai Falls nearby — best right after the monsoon rains.

ஜவ்வாது மலை

Jawadhu Hills

Untouched · Tribal heartland

A wide range of blue-green hills between Vellore and Tiruvannamalai, home to Malayali tribal villages. Fewer tourists, no crowds — this is the raw side of the Eastern Ghats.

Bend 01 · Chase water

Beemanmadavu Falls

A hidden waterfall reached by a short forest walk. Best from November to January when the stream runs full.

Bend 02 · Look up

Vainu Bappu Observatory

At Kavalur, deep inside the hills, sits one of Asia's large optical telescopes. The clear, dark skies here are the reason why.

Bend 03 · Look out

Glass House Viewpoint

A simple viewpoint near Jamunamarathur with wide views of folded green ridges — stunning at sunset.

Bend 04 · Slow down

Tribal Villages & Orchards

Drive through jackfruit orchards and small Malayali hamlets. Buy hill honey and jackfruit straight from roadside stalls.

பயணக் குறிப்புகள்

Plan it simply

Everything you need to know, kept short.

Best time

November to February — cool air, clear views, and full waterfalls. Avoid peak summer afternoons.

Getting there

Nearest railhead for Yelagiri is Jolarpettai (~20 km). Jawadhu is best reached by road via Polur or Vaniyambadi. Both are a comfortable drive from Chennai, Vellore, or Bengaluru.

Stay & eat

Yelagiri has plenty of resorts and homestays. Jawadhu has fewer options — book ahead or plan it as a day drive.

Pack light, pack right

Walking shoes, a light jacket for winter mornings, and cash — network and card machines fade past the hairpins.
